Špilberk Castle opens new wartime casemate exhibition

A new exhibition titled ‘Kasematy válečné’ (War Casemates) has opened at Špilberk Castle in Brno. The exhibit is located within an authentic, partially reconstructed air-raid shelter and focuses on the period following the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia.

Curator Anežka Špinlerová noted that while the space was intended as a shelter for the local garrison, the exhibition specifically highlights the bombing of Brno in 1944 and 1945 and its impact on the civilian population. Visitors can view photographs of the castle's conversion into Wehrmacht barracks, propaganda posters, and historical film footage.

This opening is part of a larger revitalization project. Zbyněk Šolc, director of the Brno City Museum, stated that further areas, including the ‘Prison Casemates’ and ‘Fortress Casemates,’ are expected to open as reconstruction progresses, with the next phase planned for 2027.
