Pilgrims from Nuevo Laredo Diocese robbed on Guanajuato highway
A group of 47 pilgrims from the Diocese of Nuevo Laredo was stopped on a highway in Guanajuato, Mexico, in the early hours of 1 August. Men dressed in uniforms resembling the National Guard signaled the bus to stop; the driver opened the door, and the assailants forced the passengers to kneel at gunpoint, seizing suitcases, bags, cellphones and other belongings.
Three pilgrims suffered physical injuries, including a head wound, a facial injury and a fractured nose, while a 10‑year‑old child experienced a crisis during the attack. Bishop Luis Carlos Lerma Martínez expressed relief that no lives were lost but condemned the lack of security on Mexican highways and urged authorities to strengthen road safety measures.
