Captain Smit Machchhar survives mid-air cockpit attack on Flydubai flight FAST-MOVING

Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot for Flydubai, is being hailed as a hero after surviving a mid-air attack by his co-pilot on Flight FZ1073. The flight, traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30, experienced a rapid descent of approximately 14,000 to 17,000 feet during the incident.

The UAE General Prosecutor confirmed the co-pilot initiated a terrorist act, attacking Machchhar with an emergency axe in an attempt to seize control of the aircraft. The attacker, identified as Omani national Hamam Alhamami, was reportedly restrained by passengers and crew, allowing reserve pilots to regain control and perform an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Machchhar sustained serious injuries, including a fractured hand and multiple lacerations, and is receiving medical treatment in Abu Dhabi. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have both praised the pilot's courage and presence of mind in preventing a catastrophic disaster. Investigations by UAE and Saudi authorities are ongoing to determine the exact motives and circumstances of the attack.
