Pine needles and salt offer traditional household uses
Traditional practices in Dalmatia suggest using dried pine needles mixed with coarse salt for various household purposes. Because pine needles contain aromatic essential oils, they can be utilized as a natural home remedy.
One method involves mixing dried, crushed needles with an equal amount of salt and placing the mixture in small cloth bags. These bags can be hung in closets to provide a fresh forest scent and absorb moisture, particularly among winter clothing. If the scent fades, adding a few drops of fir essential oil can refresh the mixture.
Another application is a foot soak for relaxation. A handful of pine needles can be steeped in boiling water for 30 minutes, then strained and added to a basin of warm water (38 to 40 degrees Celsius) along with two tablespoons of salt. This is intended for comfort and aroma rather than medical effects.
Additionally, the mixture can serve as a simple kitchen deodorizer. Placing the dry pine needle and salt combination in an open container can help absorb intense food odors, such as fish or onions.
