Pineda de Mar sewage contamination persists for fifty years

For nearly fifty years, an urbanization in Pineda de Mar has struggled with unresolved fecal sewage discharges within the Montnegre i el Corredor Natural Park. Documented evidence of bacterial and streptococcus contamination in areas like Font Fresca dates back to 1975.

Despite various warnings and reports over the decades, including issues with salinization of local wells and unfinished sewage networks, the problem persists. In 2017, local officials noted that the situation could constitute an environmental crime. Although a 2.2 million euro sanitation project was approved in 2019, it has not been implemented.

The Guardia Civil's Seprona unit has intervened multiple times, filing administrative complaints regarding unauthorized discharges in 2018 and 2021. As a provisional measure, the local council installed mini-purification plants in 2022, but the underlying infrastructure issues remain unresolved.
