Pinehurst light rail station opens in North Seattle
Sound Transit has officially opened the Pinehurst light rail station in North Seattle, marking the agency’s first infill station. Located at Northeast 130th Street near Interstate 5, the station fills a transit gap between the existing Northgate and Shoreline stops.
Originally approved by voters in 2016 with a projected completion date of 2031, the project was completed five years ahead of schedule. The budget for the station increased to $240 million from an initial estimate of $72 million. The station is designed to serve between 2,600 and 4,200 daily riders, with Sound Transit projecting an average of approximately 3,400 boardings as the area develops.
The elevated station provides access to the 1 Line and 2 Line, offering travel times of roughly 15 minutes to Westlake in downtown Seattle and 53 minutes to Sea-Tac Airport. The facility does not include a parking garage, instead prioritizing commuters who walk, bike, or use local bus services, such as the new King County Metro Route 77.
