Pinehurst man charged in child sexual abuse material investigation

Joseph Byrne, 63, has been charged following a months-long investigation into the possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

The investigation began in May after detectives received a cyber tip. Working with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI), authorities seized multiple electronic devices and materials from Byrne’s residence. Following the execution of additional search warrants, Byrne was charged with eight counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and two counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

Byrne is currently in custody and is being transported to the Moore County Detention Center. Pinehurst Police Chief Glen Webb described the case as “deeply disturbing,” noting that the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges may be possible.
