Pineto scale insect treatments show early positive results
Initial results indicate positive outcomes from treatments targeting the turtle scale insect (Toumeyella parvicornis) in Pineto, Italy. Conducted in collaboration with the Torre del Cerrano Marine Protected Area and coordinated by the Regional Phytosanitary Service, the interventions began on August 17, 2026.
Verifications of the treated trees have shown significant devitalization of young parasite specimens, specifically the nymphs, which appear dark and shriveled. This provides early evidence of the effectiveness of insecticide applied via endotherapy. However, a definitive evaluation is pending as the full process takes 45 to 60 days. A follow-up inspection is scheduled in approximately one month to assess the condition of the remaining adult specimens.
The monitoring program in the municipality of Pineto covered 712 stone pine (Pinus pinea) specimens, with approximately 330 trees treated. In the Torre del Cerrano Marine Protected Area, 1,568 trees were monitored and roughly 300 were treated. Additionally, 84 plants were treated in Filiani Park. The Regional Phytosanitary Service is also considering a scientific experiment involving the introduction of a natural antagonist to the parasite, following protocols used in other regions.
