Pinglu Canal opens to connect western China to the sea

The Pinglu Canal in Guangxi, China, officially opened to navigation on September 16, 2026. Spanning 134.2 kilometers, the canal connects the inland river systems of southwestern China, including Nanning, to the Beibu Gulf via the Qinjiang River.

Built with a total investment of approximately 72.7 billion yuan, the project is designed to meet Grade I inland waterway standards, allowing vessels of up to 5,000 metric tons to pass. The canal features three cascaded hubs—Madao, Qishi, and Qingnian—with the Madao Hub containing the world’s largest water-saving ship lock for an inland waterway.

The new route is expected to reduce shipping distances by more than 560 kilometers compared to traditional routes through Guangzhou, potentially lowering logistics costs by 18% to 30%. This infrastructure is intended to strengthen trade links between western China and ASEAN markets, with the launch of new international trade routes such as the Nanning-Can Tho (Vietnam) line.
