Pinglu Valley in China continues to lengthen due to tectonic forces
Geological research indicates that the Pinglu Valley in north-central China is continuously lengthening due to powerful tectonic forces. Located on the loess plateau of Shanxi Province, the canyon measures approximately 10 kilometers in length, up to 2 kilometers in width, and reaches depths of 100 meters, characterized by nearly vertical walls.
The valley is a component of the Shanxi Rift System, an active rift stretching over 1,200 kilometers from Shanxi Province to the Wei River valley. This system is shaped by normal faults where crustal blocks rise and sink relative to one another. The process of crustal extension in the North China Block began during the late Miocene, roughly 10 to 12 million years ago, and remains ongoing.
Studies suggest the valley lengthens at an estimated rate of 0.5 to 1.6 millimeters per year. GPS data indicates the mechanism is complex, potentially linked to the lateral extrusion of material following the collision of India and Eurasia, lithospheric weakening, and mantle convection. The region's loess deposits also play a role, as the soft material is highly susceptible to water erosion, creating deep gorges and steep cliffs following tectonic shifts.
