Taiwan authorities intensify crackdown on narcotics and drug-impaired driving

Law enforcement agencies in Taiwan have conducted several high-profile operations targeting narcotics trafficking and drug-impaired driving. In Taipei and Taoyuan, police arrested two suspects following a three-month investigation. The operation uncovered 248 packs of drug-laced coffee, ketamine, etomidate, and a modified submachine gun used by the suspects for self-defense during transactions.

Multiple incidents of drug-impaired driving were reported across various regions. In Kaohsiung, a driver caused a multi-vehicle collision resulting in three injuries before testing positive for amphetamines, ketamine, and benzodiazepines. In Taipei, a motorcyclist was apprehended after a dangerous pursuit involving running red lights and driving against traffic, testing positive for etomidate. Other recent arrests involved a driver in Banqiao who fled a police inspection and a man in Taichung found in an abnormal mental state after abandoning a motorcycle.

On a strategic level, the Taiwan High Prosecutors Office hosted the 2026 Cross-Border Drug Control Cooperation Forum. The event brought together six major Taiwanese drug enforcement systems and international partners from the United States, Japan, Singapore, and the Philippines to enhance technological investigation and regional intelligence sharing to combat transnational drug crime.
