Pingtung County suspends work and classes due to heavy rain and flooding

Heavy rainfall caused by a low-pressure zone and southwest monsoon has triggered flooding and traffic disruptions across Pingtung County, Taiwan. In response to intense precipitation exceeding 100mm in some areas, the Pingtung County Government announced the suspension of work and classes starting at 12:00 PM on the 25th for several townships, including Fangshan and Ancun in Linbian.

County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi conducted disaster inspections in Fangliao, Linbian, and Xinyuan to assess pumping stations and flood control facilities. The heavy rain has reportedly exceeded the capacity of existing drainage systems in certain areas. To combat the flooding, the county has deployed 20 pumping stations, 177 mobile pumps, and various water level sensors, while also requesting additional mobile pumps from the central government.

Long-term mitigation plans are being discussed, including a proposed 500 million TWD expansion of the Linbian pumping station to increase capacity from 10CMS to 25CMS. Officials are also working to address drainage inefficiencies in Xinlong Village caused by dense aquaculture pipelines and planning improved drainage networks for Gangxi Village.
