Xie Dian-lin and parents detained in Changhua election bribery case

Changhua County Council Speaker Xie Dian-lin and his parents, Xie Xin-long and former legislator Zheng Ru-fen, have been detained following allegations of election bribery. The Changhua District Prosecutors Office conducted searches and investigations into a banquet held at the Changhua County Council in June, which authorities believe involved illegal vote-buying.

Prosecutors have requested detention for Xie Dian-lin and his father, citing significant suspicion of violating the Public Officials Election and Recall Act and risks of evidence destruction. Zheng Ru-fen was released on 1 million TWD bail with residential restrictions. Other accomplices have been released on bail ranging from 30,000 to 100,000 TWD.

The case has sparked intense political debate. Kuomintang (KMT) members, including Changhua County Magistrate candidate Wei Ping-zheng, have questioned the necessity of the detention and the legal definition of bribery in social settings. Conversely, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has stated it respects the judicial process and maintains that legal standards must be applied equally to all political actors.
