Pinheiros clinches women's handball final berth and defeats Paulistano in water‑polo derby

Esporte Clube Pinheiros secured a place in the Sul‑Centro women’s handball final after a 27‑16 semifinal victory over Uruguay’s Layva on June 17, earning the right to face Argentina’s Sedalo on June 19. Goalkeeper Jéssica Oliveira was named the match’s standout and coach Maurício Antonucci praised the team’s defensive solidity.

Earlier in the tournament, Pinheiros had also advanced past the group stage by beating Uruguay’s Scuola Italiana 25‑17, with Mariana Merlin highlighted as a top performer.

On June 17, the Pinheiros men’s water‑polo squad delivered a dominant performance in the Derby dos Jardins, beating Paulistano 15‑10 at the latter’s home pool. The team surged ahead in the third period, with Gustavo Guimarães (six goals) and Tomas Galimberti among the scorers, and will next meet Flamengo on August 8.
