Pink Corridor project explores transatlantic nuclear shipping

The Pink Corridor project is a new feasibility study aimed at establishing a transatlantic maritime corridor specifically designed for nuclear-powered container ships. This initiative is a collaborative effort between major global industry players, including Lloyd’s Register, the shipping company A.P. Moller - Maersk, and the ports of Charleston in the United States and Felixstowe in the United Kingdom.

As the maritime sector seeks decarbonization alternatives, the project focuses on analyzing the regulatory, security, and operational requirements necessary to safely navigate nuclear merchant vessels between Europe and North America. Rather than building a ship first, the partners are using a theoretical ship concept to simulate and identify potential friction points, such as emergency management, reactor cybersecurity, and insurance frameworks. This proactive approach aims to map out challenges before they materialize in the commercial market.
