Pink dolphins spotted off the coast of Oman
Rare pink dolphins have been observed swimming near Qantab beach in Muscat, Oman, capturing the attention of marine observers and wildlife enthusiasts. The sighting has prompted scientific discussion regarding the species and the cause of their unusual pigmentation.
Experts suggest several biological possibilities for the pink coloration. It could be Risso’s dolphins, which transition from dark grey to lighter skin as they age. Alternatively, Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins can develop lighter or pinkish tones due to blood vessels located near the skin surface, which assist in temperature regulation. While the pink color is famously associated with the Amazon river dolphin (boto), experts noted that the Oman sighting involves a different habitat and biological profile.
Other factors that could influence the appearance include natural pigment variations, age, or genetic conditions such as albinism and leucism, though these cannot be confirmed through video alone. Lighting and viewing angles may also affect how the color is perceived.
