Pink Floyd’s ‘Atom Heart Mother’ marks 56 years since chart-topping release

The 56th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s fifth studio album, ‘Atom Heart Mother’, marks a pivotal moment in rock history. Released on October 2, 1970, in the United Kingdom, it was the band’s first album to reach number one on the British charts.

The album represented a significant stylistic shift from psychedelic underground music toward epic progressive rock landscapes. It featured a 23-minute symphonic suite on the first side, incorporating a brass orchestra and the John Alldis Choir. The second side included individual contributions such as Roger Waters’ ‘If’ and David Gilmour’s ‘Fat Old Sun’.

The album is equally famous for its surreal cover art designed by Hipgnosis, led by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell. The imagery features a cow named Lulubelle III in a field, notably omitting the band’s name and the album title. While band members have occasionally been self-critical of the work in later years, it is recognized as a foundational step that paved the way for later masterpieces like ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ and ‘Wish You Were Here’.
