Pinneberg-Elmshorn rail expansion planned to boost S-Bahn capacity
The Schleswig-Holstein state government is planning a four-track expansion of the railway line between Pinneberg and Elmshorn. The project, estimated to cost approximately one billion euros, aims to implement an S-Bahn service with a ten-minute frequency.
According to Susanne Henckel, State Secretary for Transport, the expansion would include two new stations, Elmshorn-Süd and Pinneberg-Nord. The government asserts that an S-Bahn solution would increase seat capacity during peak hours by 60 percent, compared to only 18 percent with a regional train variant. The proposed service would provide direct connections to major Hamburg hubs, including Hamburg Hauptbahnhof.
While official timelines have not been finalized, industry experts suggest that S-Bahn services on this route may not begin for at least ten years.
