Piombino council to discuss ‘Signal for Help’ awareness motion
The Fratelli d'Italia political group in Piombino has submitted a motion to the City Council to promote awareness of the ‘Signal for Help’. This non-verbal hand gesture—involving an open palm, a tucked thumb, and folded fingers—is designed to allow individuals in situations of abuse or violence to discreetly request assistance without speaking.
Originally developed by the Canadian Women’s Foundation in 2020 to address increased risks of violence during pandemic isolation, the signal has gained international recognition. The proposed local campaign aims to make the gesture widely recognizable in public spaces, including schools, shops, and local businesses, ensuring that bystanders can identify and respond to a silent plea for help.
