Piombino environmental remediation progress remains limited after 20 years

In Piombino, Italy, the ongoing environmental remediation of the Site of National Interest (Sin) remains a complex challenge twenty years after its establishment. The site covers approximately 931 hectares of land, including steel plants, the port, and various industrial and public areas.

According to ministerial data, only 61 hectares of the 931 terrestrial hectares have been fully remediated and certified. While 395 hectares are classified as non-contaminated, the remaining area consists of lands that are either not yet fully investigated, potentially contaminated, or have approved remediation projects in progress.
