Piombino Port Authority proposes infrastructure redesign for steel hub
The Northern Tyrrhenian Sea Port System Authority (AdSP) has presented a technical functional adjustment (ATF) to the Piombino Port Master Plan. This proposal aims to implement the Program Agreement signed in February 2025, which focuses on environmental safety, industrial reconversion, and economic development for the local steel hub.
The redesign involves significant structural changes to the North Dock and the Foreport. Key modifications include shifting the North Dock West Quay back by 105 meters while extending the North Quay by the same distance. A westward rotation of the North West Quay is also planned, which will create a new area known as the West Dock. These changes are expected to reduce land surfaces for the quays while expanding the water area.
Regarding seabed depths, the plan sets depths between 13 meters at the Lucchini Dock and 16 meters at the West Quay, with 15 meters near the North West Quay. This adjustment is intended to optimize dredging volumes based on the dimensions of expected vessels. Additionally, the plan includes the recovery of the former Mineral Parks area, which returned to the full availability of the AdSP in 2023 and is included in Tuscany’s simplified logistics zone.
