Pioneer 11 completes first flyby of Saturn

On September 1, 1979, the Pioneer 11 spacecraft performed the first successful flyby of Saturn. Managed by NASA’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California, the mission involved high stakes as scientists monitored the craft's progress through the planet's ring system.

During its closest approach, Pioneer 11 captured images of Saturn's disk, including the Cassini Division and the Keeler Gap. The mission required precise timing, with controllers at Mission Control closely watching data to ensure the spacecraft, traveling at 70,000 miles per hour, avoided potential collisions with ice and rock within the rings.
