Pioneering Liver Transplant Techniques Unveiled in Hong Kong and Warsaw

Researchers at the University of Hong Kong have introduced a robot‑assisted micro‑surgical platform that enabled the world’s first live‑donor micro‑liver transplant and new reconstruction methods for head and neck cancers. The robot’s seven‑degree‑of‑freedom arms filter hand tremor, scale movements and provide enhanced visualisation, allowing surgeons to work with sub‑millimetre precision. Dr Velda Chow Ling‑yu noted that the system reduces operator fatigue and speeds training of surgeons.

Separately, surgeons at Warsaw Medical University performed the first ever chimera liver transplant, combining a portion of the patient’s own liver with a graft from a deceased donor. The operation, led by Prof Michał Grąt, allowed a 47‑year‑old woman with advanced liver cancer to retain only her regenerated native liver after two staged surgeries. The innovative approach avoided the need for a full donor organ and demonstrated rapid post‑operative recovery.

Both breakthroughs expand the possibilities of liver surgery, offering new options for patients with complex hepatic conditions and highlighting rapid advances in surgical technology and technique.
