Piotr Borek returns to UKEN Rector position after court ruling
Professor Piotr Borek has returned to his position as Rector of the National Education Commission University (UKEN) in Krakow following a ruling by the Provincial Administrative Court (WSA) in Warsaw. On September 29, 2026, the court upheld Borek’s complaint against the Ministry of Science and Higher Education’s decision to dismiss him.
Borek officially resumed his duties on September 30, 2026, supported by legal opinions stating the court's ruling allows for the resumption of his responsibilities. However, the dispute remains unresolved as the Ministry of Science and Higher Education does not recognize Borek as the rector, maintaining that Professor Wojciech Bąk holds the position.
The conflict dates back to September 2024, when dismissal proceedings began. The Ministry had previously cited “persistent and gross violations” of labor law and trade union rights as grounds for his removal in June 2025. The Ministry is currently reviewing the court's decision and is considering filing a cassation appeal to the Supreme Administrative Court.
