PIP disability benefit claims rise across England and Wales
Data regarding Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claims in England and Wales shows significant trends in disability benefit usage. In April 2026, 52,210 claimants in England and Wales were recorded with non-specific back pain as their primary disabling condition, representing 1.3% of all PIP claimants. Because non-specific back pain lacks an identified underlying cause, it can be difficult for assessors to verify symptoms objectively, leading to concerns regarding potential system abuse.
On the Isle of Wight, PIP recipients increased by 60.1% over a five-year period between July 2021 and July 2026, rising from 7,124 to 11,405 people. This growth was particularly sharp among 16-19-year-olds, where numbers increased by 142.5%. Significant rises were also noted in the 60-64 and 65-69 age demographics.
Nationally, the number of people entitled to PIP across England and Wales reached 4.1 million by the end of July 2026. The combined total of those entitled to either PIP or Disability Living Allowance (DLA) grew from 3.5 million in February 2020 to 5.4 million in March 2026.
