Pipalkoti tunnel collapse death toll reaches 10 in Uttarakhand

The death toll from the tunnel collapse at the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC) Vishnugad-Pipalkoti hydroelectric project in Uttarakhand has reached 10. The accident occurred on August 13 when a landslide near the Birhi River triggered a surge of water and debris, flooding the three-kilometre under-construction tunnel.

Rescue operations involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the Indian Army concluded after the bodies of two workers, identified as Lukas Topno and Chetan Poyam, were recovered. Of the 22 people caught in the tunnel, 12 were rescued with injuries, while 10 fatalities have been confirmed.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident to determine necessary safety precautions for future construction projects. Search teams utilized suction pumps and heavy machinery to clear sludge and debris to facilitate the recovery efforts.
