Cusco forest fire kills one and injures two near Machu Picchu
A major forest fire in the Yanahuara area of the Urubamba province, located within the Sacred Valley of the Incas in Cusco, has resulted in one death and two injuries. The deceased, an elderly individual, reportedly died while attempting to combat the flames directly. The two injured persons are receiving treatment at the Cusco Regional Hospital for second-degree burns.
The fire has been active for approximately 36 hours, fueled by dry vegetation, high solar radiation, and strong winds. Authorities have noted that the blaze is in close proximity to tourist buses and the main access routes to Machu Picchu, specifically near the Ollantaytambo train station.
Over 150 brigadiers and 40 volunteer firefighters are participating in the containment efforts. Due to the difficult terrain and adverse weather, local authorities have requested aerial support, including helicopters and aircraft from the Peruvian Air Force, to reach inaccessible points of the fire. The cause is believed to be related to agricultural land clearing.
