Piracicaba health officials issue leptospirosis warnings after river flooding

Following the overflow of the Piracicaba River, the Zoonosis Control Center (CCZ) conducted door-to-door health orientations for residents and business owners in the Rua do Porto region. The initiative aimed to prevent the spread of leptospirosis, a disease caused by bacteria transmitted through contact with water or mud contaminated by the urine of infected animals.

Health agents visited approximately 80 residences and commercial establishments, including restaurants, to distribute informative materials. Officials advised that when contact with floodwaters is unavoidable, individuals should use waterproof boots and gloves, especially during cleaning activities. Other recommendations included avoiding waste accumulation and protecting food and water from contamination.

Symptoms of leptospirosis can appear between two and 30 days after exposure. Common signs include high fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and muscle aches, particularly in the calves. Severe cases may lead to jaundice and damage to the kidneys or liver.
