Piraeus Bar Association challenges private law school licenses
The Piraeus Bar Association has decided to file a legal challenge with the Council of State to annul the licensing, evaluation, and operational regulatory acts of all non-state law schools in Greece.
The Association's Board of Directors expressed strong opposition to the regulatory framework governing the establishment of private law schools. They criticized the National Authority for Higher Education (EThAAE) for a lack of transparency in forming committees and certifying curricula, specifically noting the exclusion of legal profession representatives despite objections from the Plenary of Presidents of Bar Associations.
The Association argues that higher education should not be treated as a commercial commodity and emphasizes the need for strict guarantees regarding academic quality, scientific competence of faculty, and necessary infrastructure. They are calling for a comprehensive plan that includes a maximum annual cap on student admissions across all private law schools to ensure the dignity and quality of the legal profession.
