Piraeus Chamber calls for protection of energy-intensive businesses
The Piraeus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EBEP) has called for an immediate “shield” to protect energy-intensive businesses from the ongoing energy crisis. During a recent Board of Directors meeting, EBEP President Vasilis Korkidis highlighted the severe impact of high oil and electricity prices on operational costs. He warned that if these rising costs are not addressed through a comprehensive package of government measures, there is a significant risk they will be passed on to final consumer prices.
While the industrial sector shows an upward trend, leadership noted that performance could be significantly higher if energy costs were stabilized. The Chamber also expressed concern regarding the European Union's stance on the current energy crisis and the volatility of electricity, oil, and natural gas prices.
Additionally, the meeting addressed new government measures for debt management. A new regulation allowing for the settlement of debts in up to 120 installments is expected to take effect by late October or early November. This scheme, which includes a minimum installment of 30 euros, covers debts to tax authorities and social security funds that become overdue by December 31, 2024. Applications for this arrangement can be submitted until June 30, 2027.
