Piraeus Chamber of Commerce calls for fair competition rules
The Piraeus Chamber of Commerce has issued a formal intervention to four Greek ministries regarding the challenges posed by ultra-fast fashion and large international digital platforms. The Chamber argues that the rapid growth of cross-border e-commerce creates significant distortions in competition, consumer safety, and environmental sustainability.
Greek businesses currently operate under strict tax, social security, labor, and environmental regulations. In contrast, the Chamber notes that the massive import of low-value products from third countries makes effective market oversight difficult and undermines equal competition. According to European Commission data, approximately 4.6 billion low-value e-commerce shipments entered the European Union in 2024.
The Chamber has submitted eight specific proposals to the Greek government, including the strengthening of customs and sampling controls for small parcels imported from third countries, to ensure a more level playing field.
