Piraeus fabric store destroyed by major early morning fire

A major fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday at a commercial building in Piraeus, housing a fabric store and an antique shop. The blaze, which began around 02:00 near the intersection of Nikita and Ethnikis Antistaseos streets, resulted in the total destruction of the building, leaving only its metal skeleton and shutters.

The Greek Fire Service deployed 22 firefighters with eight vehicles, including a specialized boom vehicle and water tankers from local authorities, to combat the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent structures. One nearby apartment building was evacuated as a precaution after being singed by the heat.

During the operation, firefighters located a male worker in the building's basement. The individual, described as a man from Bangladesh or the Philippines, was rescued and is reported to be in good health. The fire was brought under partial control by approximately 04:20.
