Piraeus: Three dead after car plunges into sea

A family of three died on Sunday night, October 25, after their vehicle plunged into the sea at Gate E2 of the Piraeus port. The victims have been identified as an 82-year-old man, his 72-year-old wife, and their 45-year-old son.

The incident occurred as the vehicle was disembarking from the ferry ‘Diagoras’ during a period of heavy rainfall and intense storms. Preliminary reports suggest the driver may have lost control due to poor visibility and adverse weather conditions, with some accounts indicating the vehicle may have reversed into the water.

A major rescue operation was launched involving the Hellenic Coast Guard, the Underwater Operations Unit, the Hellenic Navy, and private vessels. While rescuers initially recovered the son without consciousness, the two elderly parents remained trapped inside the submerged vehicle and were later recovered deceased.

Authorities are conducting a full investigation into the exact circumstances of the accident to determine if safety measures at the port facilities need to be reviewed, particularly regarding visibility and signage during extreme weather events.
