Piraeus Port Authority advances Pier 6 expansion

The Piraeus Port Authority (OLTH) is advancing the expansion of Pier 6, with construction sites operating on a 24/7 basis. To date, seven caissons have been installed, and the eighth is currently under construction, out of a total of 21 planned for the project. The current implementation rate is approximately three caissons per month.

Each caisson is a prefabricated reinforced concrete structure measuring roughly 30 meters in length, 15 meters in width, and 20 meters in height, weighing up to 1,400 tons. Once completed, the Pier 6 quay will extend from 568 meters to 1,081 meters, and its operational depth will increase from 12.6 meters to 16.8 meters. This infrastructure upgrade is designed to accommodate major shipping lines and increase capacity.

Project Director Dimitris Moutsakis stated that while progress is steady, active and immediate support from the State is required to ensure continuity and prevent further delays regarding issues beyond the company's control. The installation of the remaining caissons is expected to be completed within the next 5–6 months.
