Piraeus school complex evacuated after sewage flooding

A school complex in Piraeus, Greece, was urgently evacuated after sewage from the drainage network flooded the ground and basement floors. The flooding reached electrical panels, causing sparks and creating immediate risks of electrocution or fire while electrical work was being performed on-site.

The complex houses the 1st Vocational High School of Piraeus, the 2nd Evening Vocational High School, the 2nd Laboratory Center, and the SAEK Piraeus. The local branch of the Teachers' Association (ELME) reported that educators had previously warned authorities in writing about building issues as early as September 2.

ELME Piraeus is demanding an immediate suspension of in-person operations at the complex until comprehensive technical inspections are completed and safety is officially certified by authorized technicians. The association attributed the incident to long-standing maintenance problems and insufficient funding for school infrastructure.
