Pirelli details tyre and rim plans for F1 and MotoGP through 2027
Pirelli’s head of motorsport, Dario Marrafuschi, explained that the company’s Formula 1 supply agreement has been extended through 2028 and outlined the new open‑wheel rim regulations for the 2026 season. He said hollow‑spoke rims are becoming a key tool for managing brake‑duct heat, with teams adopting different strategies for tyre temperature. The 2026 cars will generate less downforce, affecting tyre thermal balance, and Pirelli will retain five revised tyre compounds for 2027, dropping the C6 option. Development of a super‑intermediate wet tyre continues, though a missed test in Bahrain has slowed progress. Marrafuschi also described the logistical challenges of adding a Middle‑East Grand Prix, noting potential delays of six to sixteen weeks due to the Strait of Hormuz.
In MotoGP, Pirelli confirmed it will keep the current minimum tyre pressure rule for 2027, requiring 1.80 bar front and 1.68 bar rear for a set portion of race laps. Penalties for breaches have affected recent races, with riders demoted for non‑compliance. Giorgio Barbier, Pirelli’s Motorcycle Racing Director, said the company’s tyres have a wider operating pressure window, which could reduce the frequency of penalties even if the rule remains, and that any future changes will be evaluated after the transition from Michelin.
The announcements show Pirelli’s continued technical involvement across the two premier two‑wheel racing series as it prepares for the regulatory changes slated for 2026‑27.
