Pirinsko Mountains to host SAREX-26 aviation rescue drill
A large-scale joint search and rescue exercise, codenamed SAREX-26, is scheduled to take place on November 5, 2026, at Bunderska Polyana in Pirin National Park. The drill, organized by the Civil Aviation Administration, will simulate an aviation accident in a difficult-to-reach mountainous area.
The operation will run from 10:00 to 13:00 and aims to test the readiness of various structures and improve coordination between ground and air rescue teams during complex high-altitude operations. Participating entities include the Border Police, the Bulgarian Air Force, HEMS Sofia, mountain rescue services, and specialized dog rescue units.
Preparatory training for the coordination of the event was conducted on October 21. Residents and visitors in the Bansko region are advised that helicopters and specialized equipment will be active in the area during the exercise.
