Pirkanmaa MPs urge development of Tampere–Turku railway

Members of Parliament from Pirkanmaa are calling for the development of the Tampere–Turku railway connection to be moved into further preparatory stages. They emphasize the importance of securing service levels that support regional accessibility, commuting, and economic needs within Finland’s growth triangle.

According to the representatives, the first phase of increasing traffic could potentially be implemented without significant track investments, with the only essential infrastructure requirement being the construction of stops. They noted that these investments could even be completed without state funding if preliminary negotiations are initiated.

The group is urging the Ministry of Transport and Communications to begin service level planning, infrastructure negotiations, and market dialogue. They suggest that the development opportunities for the Tampere–Turku connection should be evaluated as part of the ongoing preparations for passenger train traffic tendering.
