Pisa and Genoa mark 742nd anniversary of the Battle of Meloria
A delegation from Pisa, led by Mayor Michele Conti, travelled to Genoa on 6 August to take part in commemorations of the 742nd anniversary of the 1284 Battle of Meloria. The first ceremony was held in Genoa’s Campopisano district, the historic site where Pisan prisoners were taken after the defeat. Conti highlighted the shift from medieval rivalry to modern cooperation between the two former maritime republics and called for cultural, tourist and economic collaboration.
The programme continues with a ceremony at the actual battle site, where a traditional laurel crown will be cast into the sea to honour the fallen. Historical analyses note that the Genoese victory altered the balance of naval power in the western Mediterranean, signalling the rise of Genoa and the gradual decline of Pisa’s maritime dominance, although Pisa remained a commercial and naval force for several decades thereafter.
