Pisa grants honorary citizenship to former football president Romeo Anconetani

The city of Pisa held a ceremony on September 21, 2026, to confer honorary citizenship upon Romeo Anconetani, the historic president of Pisa Sporting Club from 1978 to 1994. Mayor Michele Conti praised Anconetani for his ability to discover talent and for leading the club to significant results in Italian and European football.

During the event, Anconetani’s son, Adolfo Anconetani, used the occasion to criticize the current management of the football club. He stated that the relationship between the fans and the club is currently “null” and expressed a desire for the team to return to the hands of the local citizens. He also called on wealthy local families to invest in the club to move away from a purely business-oriented model.

The ceremony was attended by various figures from the football world, including former players and officials, highlighting Anconetani’s lasting impact on the city’s sporting identity.
