Pisa City Council approves Via Maccatella sports field project
The Pisa City Council has rejected a popular motion presented by residents of the Piagge district regarding the redevelopment project in Via Maccatella. The decision confirms the construction of a multi-purpose sports field in the area, while excluding plans for new parking spaces.
Council member Lorenzo Vouk defended the project, stating that the redevelopment aims to reclaim a degraded area previously used as a landfill and prone to water stagnation. The plan includes a 30x15 meter field, green spaces, ecological channel preservation, and improvements to local mobility. To address resident concerns, the removal of bleachers was included to make the intervention less invasive.
The council vote saw the majority block the residents' motion, while all opposition groups voted in favor of the motion. Opposition members criticized the administration for a lack of community engagement, whereas the majority emphasized the importance of providing public spaces for youth and families and highlighted broader urban greening initiatives across the city.
