Pisa commemorates 83rd anniversary of 1943 bombing

The city of Pisa held a ceremony to commemorate the 83rd anniversary of the first bombing of the city, which occurred on August 31, 1943. According to official records, the attack resulted in 952 deaths, leaving thousands injured and many others missing.

During the event, Mayor Michele Conti highlighted the devastation that struck neighborhoods, bridges, and factories, specifically mentioning the Lungarni, the station, Porta a Mare, and the Saint-Gobain plant, where many workers died during their lunch break. He emphasized that the date is a vital part of the city's collective memory, representing destroyed families and lost homes.

Conti connected the historical tragedy to contemporary international tensions, including conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, calling for diplomacy and dialogue to build lasting peace. He noted that Pisa's ability to rebuild its community after such destruction serves as a testament to its resilience.
