Italian hospitals utilize advanced robotic and miniaturized medical technologies
Medical professionals in Italy have achieved significant milestones using advanced surgical technologies. At the F. Veneziale Hospital in Isernia, a 97-year-old patient successfully received an AVEIR intracardiac pacemaker. The miniaturized device was implanted via jugular venous access, allowing the patient to return home the same day through a Day Hospital procedure. This method avoids traditional subcutaneous pockets and leads to a lower risk of infection, which is particularly beneficial for fragile, elderly patients.
In Pisa, surgeons at the Azienda ospedaliero-universitaria pisana (Aoup) performed two successful neuroblastoma removals in a single day using the Symani robotic platform and a 4K 3D exoscope. The procedures targeted tumors on the musculocutaneous nerve of the arm and the superficial peroneal nerve of the leg. The Symani system allows for super-microsurgery by scaling down human hand movements to infinitesimal increments, reducing physiological tremors and enabling the precise separation of nerve fibers from tumor masses.
