Pisa initiates renaming of Coltano to Coltano-Marconi

The municipality of Pisa has initiated the process to rename the locality of Coltano to ‘Coltano-Marconi’. The decision aims to honor the historical connection between the area and Nobel Prize-winning physicist Guglielmo Marconi.

In the early 1900s, Marconi selected Coltano to establish Italy’s first long-wave radio station. The location’s terrain and proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea facilitated long-distance transmissions to Africa and the Americas, marking a significant milestone in telecommunications history.

Pisa Mayor Michele Conti met with Elettra Marconi, the scientist’s daughter, to discuss the initiative. Elettra Marconi expressed her gratitude, noting her father’s strong personal ties to the area and the high antennas he constructed there. The municipal council has approved the start of the procedure, which will now be forwarded to the Prefecture of Pisa.
