Pisa mourns passing of canoeing champion Armando Varini

The city of Pisa has expressed deep condolences following the death of Armando Varini, a prominent figure in the local sports and community sectors. Varini was a multi-time Italian Master champion in canoeing and kayaking and a dedicated supporter of local rowing traditions.

Filippo Bedini, the Deputy Mayor and Councilor for the Traditions of History and Identity of Pisa, described Varini as an example of strength and generosity. Varini, who was born deaf, overcame significant personal challenges, including growing up in an orphanage, to build a successful career as a dental technician and a life defined by determination.

In Pisa, Varini was a major benefactor for various associations, contributing resources to youth initiatives and solidarity projects. He held a special connection to the Arno river and served as the honorary president of Canottieri ‘Federico Antoni’, an organization that adopted the name ‘Antoni-Varini’ in his honor.
