Pisa opens new San Piero pedestrian‑cycle bridge over the Arno

A new pedestrian and cyclist bridge spanning the Arno has been inaugurated in Pisa, linking the San Rossore Park area in Cascine Nuove with the San Piero a Grado district. The structure provides a safe, direct route for walkers and cyclists between the city centre and the natural reserve, completing a segment of the local trammin‑cycle path.

The bridge was built on the former site of a 1920s Livorno aqueduct bridge and replaced the collapsed historic Ponte dei Moccoli. Construction, carried out by Preve Costruzioni of Cuneo, lasted one year and nine months and cost about €4 million, with half financed by the Tuscany regional government and the other half by the municipality of Pisa. The opening ceremony featured Mayor Michele Conti, regional environment assessor David Barontini, park president Lorenzo Bani, and other local officials, as well as a large group of cyclists, pedestrians and rowing participants.

The project is part of Pisa’s broader strategy to promote sustainable mobility and position the city as a leading ciclotourism destination in Tuscany, integrating transport, environment and tourism planning.
