Pisa politicians clash over school markings mistaken for fascist graffiti
Political figures in Pisa, Italy, are embroiled in a controversy following a misunderstanding regarding markings on the Collodi primary school. Antonio Mazzeo, Vice President of the Tuscan Regional Council for the Democratic Party (PD), initially reported on social media that fascist-style writings had appeared on the school walls, calling it an “intolerable gesture.”
However, it was quickly clarified that the markings—specifically “Sì fascia” and “No fascia”—were actually technical instructions left by construction workers regarding the installation of thermal insulation (cappotto termico). The terms referred to which parts of the wall should be wrapped in insulation and which should not.
Mazzeo subsequently apologized for the error, stating he had acted on reports from concerned parents. The incident has drawn sharp criticism from political opponents. Roberto Sbragia of Forza Italia suggested the mistake reflects a political tendency to prioritize antifascism, while Mario Palmieri of Futuro Nazionale described the event as a “glaring blunder” by the Democratic Party.
