Pisa teachers issue motion against Ministry of Education reforms

Sixty-two teachers at the ‘Filippo Buonarroti’ high school in Pisa have issued a formal motion expressing concern over recent reforms and restrictions introduced by the Ministry of Education and Merit.

The motion outlines five primary areas of contention. First, teachers cite issues with schedule reorganizations and insufficient investment in school infrastructure to manage extreme temperatures. Second, they criticize new National Guidelines, describing them as “traditionalist and hyper-identitarian” with a “Western-centric, Eurocentric, and nationalist” bias that undermines the school's role in cultural integration.

Third, the faculty warns against increased rigidity regarding student discipline and conduct grades. Fourth, they express concern over the potential restriction of teaching freedom, referencing a previous incident in the Pisa province where ministry inspectors were sent to a school following an online lecture by UN rapporteur Francesca Albanese. Finally, the teachers warn that proposed legislation regarding antisemitism could lead to “normative censorship,” hindering the ability to conduct calm discussions on historical and current political and scientific topics.
