PISA test results spark debate over Latin American education
Recent PISA test results have highlighted significant educational challenges across Latin America, sparking debate over pedagogical methods and institutional responses.
In Colombia, criticism has been directed at the teachers' union, Fecode, for failing to offer self-criticism regarding the low competency levels in reading and mathematics among students. While the union has focused on political stances and external factors such as technology and privatization, observers note that school concession models in Bogotá have outperformed traditional official education in Saber tests by up to 20 points.
Broadly across the region, the failure in PISA scores is often attributed to a cognitive deficit model where learning is treated as a matter of rote memorization rather than conceptual understanding. Critics argue that science and mathematics curricula are often decontextualized, forcing students to memorize components—such as parts of a cell or the names of planets—without understanding their functions, interactions, or real-world applications.
