Pisa urban development faces opposition over Piagge green space

Environmental groups and citizen committees in Pisa are protesting urban development projects in the Piagge area, specifically concerning the construction of a basketball court in via Maccatella and broader zoning changes.

The association ‘La Città Ecologica’ has raised concerns regarding the PISA MO project, noting that approximately 26,000 square meters of land currently designated as urban parkland could be subject to radical changes under new planning tools. Specifically, a zone near via di Parigi could allow for up to 7,131 square meters of built area, potentially accommodating around 71 apartments. The Tuscany Region’s Urban Planning and Sustainability Department has also expressed concerns regarding these building provisions.

Simultaneously, the citizen committee ‘Insieme per le Piagge’ met with municipal administrators to discuss the ongoing construction in via Maccatella. While the committee described the meeting as a ‘partial opening’ of dialogue, they are demanding a formal halt to construction to allow for a shared project. The group seeks to preserve the area’s permeability and climate mitigation capabilities, proposing an alternative green space instead of the current development.
